I have been living on the island of Vieques for over 25 years now. I love this island and it’s community, but I am often disturbed by a disrespect I see for its animal population. Whether it be horses left tied in the hot sun for hours without water or dogs chained up and ignored day after day, they deserve better. These animals are sentient beings and share many of the same emotions that we as humans do. They feel pain, hunger, thirst, fear and boredom just as we do. They deserve food, water, shelter, love and respect just as we do. I believe empathy and compassion to be natural human traits that can be developed. It is my hope that through our Humane Education Program we can create a more loving environment for all of us who share this beautiful planet.
