As an educator, Chipper believed fervently in the value of increasing ones understanding of the world around them.
As a lover of animals and a long time resident of Vieques, his experiences led him and his family to strongly support, Juntos Vieques, Inc., the humane education program on Vieques.
While other organizations on Vieques continue to work diligently to treat the symptoms, Chipper felt the only way to eventually cure the “disease’ of ignorance was through an ongoing educational program for the children of Vieques.
Juntos means “together” in Spanish and Juntos Vieques is the first and only non-profit humane education program in the Caribbean. Humane education is a lens, body of knowledge, and set of tools and strategies for teaching about human rights, animal protection, environmental stewardship, and cultural issues as interconnected and integral dimensions of a just, healthy society.
Humane education not only instills the desire and capacity to live with compassion, integrity, and wisdom, but also provides the knowledge and tools to put our values into action in meaningful, far-reaching ways so that we can find solutions that work for all.
Chipper will be greatly missed by many; however, his avid curiosity about the world will endure and continue to be nurtured through educating the youth of Vieques.
The family has very kindly asked for donations in memory of Dennis “Chipper” Lesslie to made to Juntos in support of The Vieques Humane Education Program.
Donations are accepted online at Juntosvieques.org, via secure Paypal, by check accepted at The Funky Beehive, and by mail:
